ADULT 2 DAY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSE:
This online course qualifies you as a Mental Health First Aider, giving you:
- An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
- Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
- Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
- Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgmental listening
- Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix
FORMAT:
- This is an online course delivered through the MHFA England Online Learning Hub
- Learning takes place through four live training sessions, spread across two weeks, with self-learning activities in between. See course structure section below for more detail. These can be split into half day sessions if required.
- Each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan
- We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn

About MHFA England
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England is a community
interest company and was established in 2009 after being
successfully piloted within the Department of Health. As
a community interest company, MHFA England is a
member of Social Enterprise UK. You can find out more

MHFA England provides mental health awareness and
skills training and consultancy to a variety of
organisations, businesses and communities – with the aim
to help people to develop the skills to look after their
own and others’ wellbeing and reduce the stigma
associated with mental ill health.
The company facilitates and delivers a number of courses,
including Adult MHFA, Youth MHFA and Armed Forces
MHFA. Each of the two day courses teaches the mental
health equivalent of physical first aid, tailored to the
relevant audience. At the end of a two day course
delegates are qualified as Mental Health First Aiders. The
shorter one day and half day courses are aimed at raising
mental health awareness and developing skills to support
someone who might be experiencing a mental health
issue.
MHFA England continually quality assures its training
products and applies a robust quality assurance and
evaluation process to all its course deliveries. The MHFA
England Instructor Training programme is accredited by the
Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH).

Mental health in the workplace
- At any one time one worker in six will be experiencing
depression, anxiety or issues relating to stress (Centre
for Mental Health, 2010)
- Mental ill health costs UK employers £34.9 billion
each year – the equivalent of £1,300 for every
employee in the UK workforce. This figure consists of
£10.6 billion in sickness absence, £21.2 billion in
reduced productivity, and £3.1 billion in replacing staff
who leave their jobs for mental health-related reasons
(Centre for Mental Health, 2017)
- Stress, anxiety and depression are the biggest cause of
sickness absence in our society. Work-related stress
alone accounted for 45% of all working days lost to ill
health in 2015/16 (Health and Safety Executive, 2017)
- 76% of line managers believe they are responsible
for employee wellbeing, but only 22% have received
training (BITC, Mental Health at Work Report, 2016)
